The top two finishers in the FFSA Academy French F4 Championship confirmed their talent on the spectacular Spa Francorchamps circuit in the third Qualifying session of the season. In Belgium, not only did you have to be fast, you also had to be patient to set the fastest lap time at the optimum moment of the Qualifying session. In fact, it all came down to the final minutes, with Jules Roussel holding off Alex Munoz, the poleman from Nogaro and Dijon.
At the end of the first third of the session, Jules Roussel had already set a superb 2:22.891, the first to break the 2:23 barrier. Behind Munoz in 2nd place, Monegasque Mattéo Giaccardi and Louis Iglesias were waiting. But the positions changed with each lap, making the session very interesting to follow. Munoz improved to 2:22.726, while Germany’s Montego Maassen also passed Roussel in the standings.
Mattéo Giaccardi, Hugo Herrouin, Rayan Caretti and Roméo Leurs all found themselves battling for top places as the minutes ticked away. Several drivers took advantage of the situation to bring down the temperature of their tyres, before setting off again to attack the Ardennes track for the final few minutes.
Roussel then managed to set a time of 2:22.631, definitively securing pole position for the day. Munoz remained 2nd and it was Japan’s Rintaro Sato who made a clear improvement to move up to 3rd ahead of Maassen. Herrouin, who had already set the fastest time in the morning free session, also set an excellent time to finish 5th in the session ahead of Giaccardi and Iglesias. Arthur Dorison, who had set the fastest time in private practice on Thursday, was 8th ahead of Caretti. In the end it was Guillaume Bouzar who inherited 10th place, giving him pole position for Race 2.
The starting grid for Race 3, decided by each driver’s second fastest laps, will be different however, with Munoz on pole ahead of Roussel, Herrouin, Maassen, Iglesias and Sato.
